The invention relates to a system for automatically carrying out agricultural works such as mowing the lawn. It comprises, in combination, a guide rail 2 which is substantially buried in the ground, and an agricultural vehicle 1 such as a lawnmower, fitted with a support chassis, with at least one tool such as a cutting bar 8, 16a, 16b, with means 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b for drive and steering, with guidance means, arranged so as to interact with the said guide rail and mounted movably on the said support chassis, and of control means for controlling the said drive and steering means as a function of the relative position of the guide means with respect to the support chassis, so as to make the said vehicle substantially follow the guide rail. <IMAGE>
