A moving framework 20 is hung from a fixed framework 10, and is fitted with centring and support means for allowing one of the two ends of a reference gauge ring 34 to bear on an upper part of the moving framework, and in order to support one of the two ends of a gauge ring to be calibrated 37 using a lower part of the moving framework, the weight of the assembly formed by the moving framework and the ring which it supports being balanced; a force generator 30 is arranged between the two rings so as to act on the second end of the reference ring, the ring to be calibrated having its second end interacting with the fixed framework so as to be able to be loaded by means of the moving framework when the force generator acts on the reference ring, calibration being carried out by reading the indication supplied by the ring to be calibrated for a known load on the reference ring. <IMAGE>
