The NOx emissions from diesel engines may be reduced by incorporating an adsorbent for unburnt fuel in the exhaust, together with a lean NOx catalyst. The adsorbent adsorbs unburnt fuel during cooler parts of the engine operating cycle, and releases it during hotter parts of the cycle, so that it is effective to reduce NOx.
