In a spade, consisting of a handle and of a blade with a cutter at the lower edge, the object to be achieved is to design a spade in such a way that it penetrates more easily into material to be cut and more easily severs twigs, straw stalks and the like present there. The invention achieves this object in that the blade has a symmetrical wedge-shaped or angular recess at the lower edge, and that the cutter consists of two portions which are at an obtuse angle to one another and which extend along the angular recess.
