The instrument (10) has a handgrip (11) and a tubular sleeve (12) connected to it. A sight (13) is connected to the tubular sleeve in a definite position. The sight's position like that of the sleeve between a radiation source (3) and a radiation receiver (2) is made visible by a converter (4) and can be changed in a controlled manner. The optical sight line and the axis of the sleeve lie in one plane and intersect at infinity. The distance between the sleeve and the sight equals the distance between the centres of the two transverse holes (14,15) in the surgical pin (6).
