PURPOSE:To prevent a protective material from contacting directly an optical waveguide, by sticking tightly and fixing a protective plate being softer than a prism body, to the side face of the prism body, for protecting the edge, and forming a very small step difference between the prism body and the protective plate by a grinding. CONSTITUTION:An optical waveguide input/output coupling prism having a lamellar structure in the direction parallel to the edge is constituted of a prism body 7 which is transparent, and also, has been formed by a high refractive index material, and a pair of protective plates 12a, 12b which are formed by a material whose hardness is lower than that of the prism body 7, have almost the same shape, provided with step differences 12a, 12b whose bottom parts have been raised from the prism body 7, on the bottom part, and stuck tightly and fixed to both side faces 4a, 4b of the prism body 7, respectively. The protective plates 12a, 12b and the prism body 7 consist of a step difference structure in this way, therefore, the protective plate does not contact directly the waveguide, and exerts no influence at all on the waveguide. |
