The system uses a vehicle which has a mass suspended from it and which is driven along the surface to be measured. The distance from the suspended mass to the road surface, and the acceleration of the mass w.r.t. the road surface are measured as the vehicle is driven along the surface. In order to eliminate the effects of variations in the speed of the vehicle, the spatial domain acceleration of the suspended mass is determined as a conjoint function of the acceleration of the mass with respect to the road surface and the distance travelled, and subsequently the road surface profile is determined in the spatial domain as a conjoint function of the spatial domain acceleration and the distance to the road surface. A spatial domain filter attenuates wavelength components in excess of a desired preselected max. wavelength. |
