The invention relates to a protective head covering, in particular for cyclists and sportsmen. The protective head covering consists essentially of a soft foam part which surrounds the chin and is provided with a closure at the back of the head. To increase the protective effect, panels with attachment elements are integrated in the foam. The attachment elements provide the possibility of attaching a hard helmet shell on the soft foam part.
