In an apparatus for embossing a sequence of numbers in the plastic or rubber surface of a moving article in strand form, a restoring device is assigned to the length meter (8) arranged on the circumference of an embossing wheel (1). The drive (6) of this restoring device is arranged to be at least partially symmetrical to the axis (5) of the embossing wheel. To this end, a hollow piston cylinder (63/63') which is subjected to a pneumatic force may be provided as the motor, this cylinder surrounding the axis (5) of the embossing wheel concentrically and acting, via a pressure piece (67) which is arranged in a sprung manner (69) and provided with shock-absorbers (70), on an eccentrically arranged toothed rod (71) with an associated toothed gearing (73, 74, 75). <IMAGE>
