The flat upper face (4) of the container rim is provided over the entire outer periphery with an annular projection (5). The radial width (a) of the projection is preferably 1/5 - 1/2 of the total radial width (b) of the upper face (4). The radial width (a) may be 1-3 mm. The radial section of the projection may be a circular segment. The container may have a metal lid (2) with an annular groove (8) containing a seal (7), whereby the inner diameter (d) of the groove is smaller than the inner diameter (e) of the projection (5), and greater than the inner diameter (f) of the upper face (4). The radial width of the groove may be greater than the radial width (a) of the projectin but smaller than the total radial width (b) of the container rim.
