The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for the production of tubes by the reciprocating rolling method using a rolling stand which can be moved backwards and forwards in the rolling direction and has rolls with progressively smaller passes which roll the rolling stock in alternating directions of rotation, there being an essentially cylindrical mandrel in the said rolling stock, and with a device for rotating and feeding the tube and a fixed chuck driven in rotation on the exit side for holding the tube. In order to combine the advantage for rolling of unhindered movement of the rolling mandrel in the rolling stock with an efficient method for releasing the finished tube from the mandrel and loading a new tube blank while continuing to use the same rolling mandrel, the proposal according to the invention is that the mandrel be imparted or allowed a relative velocity during the rolling process with respect to the rolling velocity of the tube to be rolled and that, after reaching a transportation distance dependent on the length of the mandrel, the said mandrel be moved back into its starting position.
