The monitoring method verifies the function of an initial procedure for reducing the temperature of the engine exhaust gases when the engine is operated at full load, to allow a second temperature reduction procedure to be activated, when the initial procedure is not adequate. The first procedure may involve adjustment of the fuel mixture ratio supplied to the engine for reducing the exhaust gas temperature, with its effectiveness monitored via a probe inserted in the exhaust gas stream. The second procedure may employ reduction of the engine loading when the first procedure does not provide the required temperature reduction.
