A casing (1) forms a closed loop in which an electrically conducting medium flows. The casing has hot (2) and cold (3) regions. By heating the hot region convection begins and the medium circulates. A magnetic field (7,8) cuts the medium. A voltage appears at two electrodes (11,12). A non-return valve (6) lies between the hot and cold regions. In the region of the magnetic field the casing has a reduced cross-section to increase flow speed. The electrodes form part of the casing wall. The field may be produced by permanent magnets and/or coils. ADVANTAGE - cheap because mechanically simple.
