A hydrogen gas detecting element is produced by treating an element body in a silane gas atmosphere having a silane content of 500 to 5,000 ppm, said element comprising Pd or Pd and Pt, or Pd, Pt and Sb dispersed on SnO2, Pd/Sn being 0.1 to 8 mol%, Pt/Sn being o to 8 mol% and Sb/Sn being 0 to 8 mol%. The element shows high selectivity and short response time in detecting hydrogen gas.
