PURPOSE:A muddy water composition for boring having improved reducing ability of water loss, obtained by adding a specific alkali metal salt of sulfoethyl cellulose as an essential component to specified muddy water for boring. CONSTITUTION:Muddy water for boring containing a monovalent salt and/or a polyvalent salt is blended with preferably 0.1-1.5wt% alkali metal salt of sulfoethyl cellulose having 0.5-2.5 substitution degree and 5-5,000cps viscosity at 1wt% aqueous solution, to give the desired muddy water for boring. EFFECT:Preventing collapse of wall of oil well and gas spouting.
