A fluid injector has a discharge passage 3A which can be closed by way of a tip valve 7. The valve is displaced into its open position by the pressure of fluid to be discharged (the fluid, e.g. fuel oil, entering port 16 and acting on a piston 9) and is displaced into its closed position by a spring 20 (Figure 3) acting on a tube 5. To open the injector, the pressure applied by the spring is overcome by the pressure of air injected into port 18, allowing the fluid to displace the tip valve. The reverse arrangement also applies. A flow of fluid may pass via tube 5 to an exhaust port 17 even when the valve is open. A solenoid may replace the spring, and a separate supply of air or steam may be used for atomising the fluid. <IMAGE> |
