An activated sludge system uses a rectangular basin, divided lengthways by two partitions each partition divided by a longitudinal wall in a narrow aeration section and a wider filtration section. The former is further subdivided into three compartments each with a bubble-type aerator. Similar aerators are installed in the filtration section below the fibre elements of the bottle brush type for the adsorption of microorganisms.
