Process for the carbonylation of propene

Propene is reacted with carbon monoxide and water or an alcohol at elevated temperature in a reaction medium composed of sulphuric acid and sulphur dioxide to give isobutyric acid or esters thereof. Compared with the known procedure in the absence of sulphur dioxide, the reaction rate and the yield are increased and the formation of oligomeric by-products is suppressed.
