In motor vehicles with alternative lefthand or righthand drive, the differing course of the steering columns through the engine compartment in many instances results in the fitting of two different designs of intake air filters mirror-symmetrical to one another. In a known air filter of this type a first, fixed air filter housing section is connected to a second air filter housing section for the air filter element, detachable from the former, by a long screw running through the detachable housing section, which increases the cost of the air filter and makes changing a filter element very awkward. In the new air filter it is proposed that, for connecting the second housing section (2) to the first housing section (3, 3'), the two sections (2; 3, 3') have compatible quick screw threads or bayonet catch elements (21, 31) and that an elastic spring element (4) be arranged on at least one of the two housing sections (2; 3, 3'), exerting a force on the said elements, which acts in the connection closing direction. The new air filter is easier to manufacture and does not require any tool for changing a filter element. At the same time, the spring element provides for secure seating of the detachable housing section and for a constant wear adjustment. <IMAGE>
