To generate coloured image patterns, it is required that the colour media of the different colours are transferred layer by layer to the sheets of paper. In known multi-colour printers, the sheets of paper are transferred into the transmission position going to and fro several times for this purpose. Due to these forward and return movements of the paper transportation devices, an offset of the colours to be stacked on top of one another cannot always be avoided. The invention is based on the object of creating an image generating device for generating a multi-coloured image on a sheet of paper in which an offset of the sheets of paper is reliably avoided during the layer-by-layer transmission of the colours to the sheets of paper. This is achieved by the fact that the transportation device can be driven to revolve in one direction of rotation step by step, that the length of the transportation device in the circumferential direction is at least equal to the length of the sheet of paper (10), and that the sheet of paper (10) can be pressed in the entire length and width against the circumferential surface (16) of the transportation device (2) by pressure means and can be separated from the revolving transportation device (2) by a separating device (29) after one or more revolutions for completing the coloured image. This makes it possible to generate faultless coloured images, the natural slip always being the same. <IMAGE>
