PURPOSE:To attain the automatic tracking control by reproducing (m) kinds (m<= integer of 3) of pilot signals having different frequencies or phases recorded on a video track by means of a rotary multi-head and obtaining consecutively accurate tracking error signals. CONSTITUTION:The rotary phases of multi-heads 5 and 6 are detected by a tack head 13, and this detection signal is sent to a phase adjusting circuit 14. This head phase detection signal SW being the output is applied to a cylinder phase comparator 16. The phase comparator 16 compares the phase of the signal SW with that of a reference signal REF of a terminal 8. This phase error signal is supplied to a cylinder motor 7 via a cylinder motor driving circuit 17. Thus multi-heads 5 and 6 are revolved at a fixed speed and phase decided by the signal REF. Then the drive of a tape 1 is controlled by a tracking error signal while the heads 5 and 6 are revolved at a prescribed speed. Thus it is possible to give the tracking control so that the heads 5 and 6 scan accurately on a desired video track.
