This invention relates to rodless cylinders. In particular, the invention shows a construction of cylinder in which there is no transmission of rectilinear motion through the casing. Thus in one embodiment the cylinder has a casing (11) which defines end fluid reservoirs (12, 13), a cylinder (14) extending between the reservoirs and a return flow path (15) extending between the reservoirs in parallel to the cylinder (14). A piston (18) is slidably disposed within the cylinder (14) and is connected, on each face, to respective ends of a toothed drive belt (21). This belt passes along the cylinder and the return flow path and around gear wheels (22, 23) which are fixed on respective shafts (25, 26). These carry output pulleys (27, 28) around which is mounted a drive belt (30), which carries a slidable power take-off element (31). Thus displacement of the piston (18) within the cylinder (14) causes rotation of the shafts and hence rectilinear movement of the power take-off element. This arrangement allows conventional rotational seals to be used for the element transmitting power out of the casing. |
