PURPOSE:To efficiently switch the intensity of an auxiliary magnetic field in recording and erasing operations by providing a magneto-optical recording medium with two auxiliary magnetic field generation means. CONSTITUTION:In a step to record information, an electromagnet 6 generates the reversely magnetized magnetic field of a magnetized recording layer 3. Namely, a current is allowed to flow in a coil 7 so that the center of a yoke can point an electrode S. Thus the auxiliary magnetic field with intensity obtained by subtracting a magnetic field that the electromagnet 6 generates from that a permanent magnet 9 does is impressed in the direction in which recording is helped. In a step to erase information, the magnetic field magnetized in the same direction in which the electromagnet 6 magnetizes the layer 3 beforehand is generated. Namely, the direction of a current allowed to flow in the coil 7 is reversed, so that the center part of the yoke 8 can point an N. Then the magnetic field that the electromagnet 6 generates and that the magnet 9 does are added, and the auxiliary magnetic field stronger than in the recording step is impressed in the direction in which erasure is helped. |
