PURPOSE:To obtain the titled lightweight and readily handleable carbon plate, having a dense surface layer and porous inner layer with excellent corrosion resistance, lubricity as well as strength and suitable as substrates for magnetic heads, etc. CONSTITUTION:Films or sheets of a phenolic resin, etc., are contact bonded to both sides of a sheet prepared by dipping a sheet, e.g. industrial filter paper, which is an aggregate of organic fibers, e.g. cellulosic fibers, etc., in a solution of a thermosetting resin, e.g. phenolic resin, etc., in an organic solvent, and impregnating the resin therein through stainless plates, etc., and kept at, e.g. 160 deg.C under pressure of 10kg/cm<2> for about 20min to give a molded article, which is then sandwiched between graphite plates or stainless steel plates from both sides and heated to about 1,000 deg.C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere at about 3 deg.C/hr heating rare, cured, fired, carbonized, and, as necessary, the surfaces are lapped to provide specular surfaces and afford the titled carbon plate having a dense surface layer and porous inner layer. |
