<p>PURPOSE:To eliminate orientation defects to obtain a uniform monodomain liquid crystal phase by forming a ferroelectric liquid crystal element so that a ratio of a thickness (d) to a refractive index (n) of a substrate on which color filters are formed is equal to or smaller than 1.0. CONSTITUTION:A color ferroelectric liquid crystal element 1 has substrates 1a and 1b consisting of transparent plates like glass plates, and a ferroelectric liquid crystal 7 is held between them. Stripe transparent electrodes 3 and 4 forming a matrix electrode structure are arranged on substrates 1a and 1b, and orientation control films 6 and 6 are formed on electrodes 3 and 4. R(red), G(green), and B(blue) color filters 2 forming color picture elements are formed on the outside of the observer-side substrate 1a with organic dyes having desired R, G, and B color characteristics, and a protective film 10 is formed on each picture element. Since the refractive index (n) and the thickness (d) (mm) of the substrate 1a are set to satisfy d/n<=1.0, orientation defects due to the variance of steps in the liquid crystal layer are eliminated to obtain a uniform monodomain liquid crystal phase.</p> |
