PURPOSE:To obtain dried root of NANBAN-KARASU-URI (Momordica cochinchinensis) having excellent expectorant activity and free from irritation of pharyngeal mucosa, preventing the decomposition of momordin II, by contacting raw root of NANBAN-KARASU-URI or its cut pieces with an aqueous solution of an acid. CONSTITUTION:A raw root or cut raw root of NANBAN-KARASU-URI is immersed in an aqueous solution of a mineral acid such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc. The pH of the aqueous solution of the acid is <=2.7, preferably <=0.5 and the root is made to contact with the solution at -10-+40 deg.C for 0.5-40hr, preferably at 0-35 deg.C for 1-4hr. The treated root is made to contact with an aqueous solution of a base (e.g. ammonia) to neutralize the acid and is dried to obtain the objective product. The aqueous solution of base has 7.5-12pH and is made to contact with the root at -10-+40 deg.C for 2-40hr. |
