In a magnetic reproduction unit, the tracking method is such that the tracks are respectively divided into n (an arbitrary number) sections to detect track variations for each section, so that as for a section in i (a number among 1-n) numbered order in a track being scanned by the rotary head, the control signal for lessening the track variation detected in the section in the i numbered order of the track preceding m (arbitrary full number) track is applied to the means for displacing the head to control the tracking of the rotary head.
