The disclosed method comprises the treatment of a document surface with a transparent matrix (3) having dispersed therein photoluminescent materials (4). According to a first embodiment, said photoluminescent materials (4) form a luminous cascade absorbing the incident light radiation and re-emitting said radiation in a wavelength band of low sensitivity for photocopying machines. According to another embodiment, said photoluminescent materials (4) form a complementary couple for the eye chromaticity curve. The protection of a document may be carried out by coating or spraying a doped matrix (3) or by printing on a pretreated paper.
