The device comprises a frame formed of two tubes 1, 2 arranged at right angles. The vertical tube 1 has, at its upper part, a fixed jaw 3 which is engaged under the peripheral rim 5 of the drum 4 and comprises an extension 6 mounted in a free telescopic manner and ending with a hook 7 which is engaged under the base 8 of the drum. The horizontal tube 1 is fixed and can be adjusted vertically. A slide 11 is mounted on the tube 1 and carries a movable jaw 12 which is engaged on the inner face of the wall of the drum. A strap 14 has one end fixed to the slide 11, passes over a roller 15, over a spindle 16 carried at the end of the arm 1, over a driving roller 17, passes around the extension 6 of the tube 2 and has its other end 26 fixed to this tube. When the strap 14 is pulled, the clamping on the drum by the movable jaw 12 and by the hook 7 enables the drum to be handled. The device applies in particular to the handling of open cylindrical drums. <IMAGE>
