PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head using a magnetoresistance effect in which a reproduction track width is correctly regulated, and an S/N ratio is improved by reducing noises. SOLUTION: This thin film magnetic head is constituted of a selectively formed magnetoresistive layer 4, magnetic bias layers 5 formed to side faces of the magnetoresistive layer via a high resistance layer 6, and a pair of leads 7 formed via a predetermined distance. In the constitution, a current flowing from the side faces of the magnetoresistive layer 4 can be reduced, and an S/N ratio can be remarkably improved.
