PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently detect, with the smaller number of heads, an error in a recording process of a magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus such as a VTR or the like. SOLUTION: In this recording checking method, a main track section 4 is erased by erasure heads E1, E2 and auxiliary information is recorded in an auxiliary track section 3. A main signal is recorded in the main track section 4 by recording heads R1, R2 (R1 is not illustrated) and the auxiliary information is reproduced from the auxiliary track section 3. The recording operation is checked and verified through the condition of the reproduced auxiliary information and a recording current that flows across the recording heads when the main information is being recorded.
