A process for preparing a molecule that contains a hydroxamic acid group. The process comprises reacting a hydroxylamine with silyl halide in the presence of a base and then reacting the product with a carboxylic acid halide containing molecule which does not contain a hydroxy, primary amine, secondary amine or thiol group. The molecule is then reacted with an acid. The compound of the above formula (I) is disclosed, wherein: Z is CH2 or NR1 Q is as defined in the specification R2 and R3 are independently hydrogen C1-6alkyl, or R2 and R3 are taken together to form a three to seven member cycloalkyl ring, a pyran-4-yl ring or a bicyclo ring of the above formula (Ia) wherein: the asterisk indicates the carbon atom common to R2 and R3 R4 is C1-6alkyl n is an integer from 1-6 and Q is as defined above.
