Alumina for semiconductor memory cell package radiating only low level alpha -rays, and a process for its production which comprises extracting an alumina component from bauxite to obtain a sodium aluminate solution, substantially removing organic compounds contained in the solution, seed-decomposing the solution to deposit alumina hydrate, and baking the alumina hydrate.
