The invention relates to a seal for sealing off stationary surfaces, especially a flange gasket for the construction of pipework and plant, consisting of an annular sealing element composed of a flexible material such as rubber, plastic, etc., and of a back-up ring composed of a hard material such as metal etc., the sealing element being connected positively and releasably to the back-up ring and its thickness being greater than that of the back-up ring. In order to create a seal of this kind which is not only simple to manufacture and install but furthermore has a high sealing efficiency for comparatively long periods in service, the invention proposes that the back-up ring (2) have on each of its two sides a respective groove (3, 4) in each of which there is a sealing ring (5, 6), these forming the sealing element (1) and resting in positive engagement at least with the outer sides of the grooves (3, 4). The two sides of the back-up ring (2) have a desired slope (7) towards the outside in its outer region beyond the sealing rings (5, 6) (Figure 1). <IMAGE>
