Reduction of the amount of nitrification-inhibiting sulfur compounds in reaction solutions, after isomerization of alpha , beta -unsaturated carboxylic acid to the corresponding trans- or cis-isomer, catalyzed by sulfur compounds (I), comprises adding less than to twice the equimolar amount of an oxidant with respect to (I), then isolating and purifying the isomer and passing the process waste liquor to biological purification.
