Ignition powder mixt. for a reinforcing charge for igniting solid propellants for barrel weapons and rockets, which is ignited by a capsule, contains an inorganic fuel (I) and an inorg. oxidant (II) in the form of a granulated mixt. free from binder. The novelty is that (II) is used in excess, instead of in stoichiometric ratio, to form pure O2 or a gas rich in O2 by thermal decomposition. The (II):(I) molar ratio is 1.1-2.5, corresp. to an excess of 10-150 mole-% (II). Pref. (II) is KC104 and is used in a molar excess of 40% with Ti as (I), 70% with TiH2 as (I) and 30% with ZrH2 as (I). (I) and (II) have a particle size smaller than 50 microns. ADVANTAGE - The mixt. prevents 'hang-fire' when the weapons are used at low temp., since the gases generated are as hot as possible and chemically reactive.
