The locking device secures a tool shank in a rotor, and comprises a hollow shaft (10) fixed to the rotor and with a transverse opening (21). A slide (14) has an axial hole (17) of the same diameter as the shank and a further transverse opening (23), and is movable inside the shaft in the axial direction. A clamping mechanism (15) comprises a tilting component (15',15'') with a central hole (26') of the same diameter as the shank and two lateral faces (30'). This fits in the openings when they are in line, with its central hole in line with that in the slide, coupling devices causing it to rotate with the shaft. Movement of the slide in the shaft tilts it about an axis at right angles to the shaft axis in response to a first axial force, allowing the shank to be inserted as far as the end of the slide. A second axial force in the opposite direction moves the central hole into an oblique position gripping the shank. USE - For a hand-held dental drilling or boring tool.
