Amino-nitro pyridine of formula (I) is prepd. by reacting alkoxy nitropyridine of formula (II) or its salt with ammonium acetate at 50-150 deg.C. R1=H or C1-4 alkyl, X and Y are not same, CH or N, R2=C1-4 alkoxy. Add 4-ethoxy-3-nitropyridine.HCl 3.0g, CH3COONH4 6.1g and anhydrous EtOH 6.7 ml into 3-neck-round bottom flask equipped with condenser and mechanical stirrer, reflux for 24 hrs, cool to about 4 deg.C, adjust pH to 8.0 with base i.e. NH4OH, filter and wash with EtOH, drying at 50 deg.C under vacuum to give 2.41g of 3-nitro-4-aminopyridine (identified by comparison with NMR spectrum of a certified sample).
