In the device for reducing the amount of sail according to the invention, the reduction in the amount of sail is achieved by winding the sail 7 onto a rotary tube 3 parallel to the longitudinal axis of the mast, while the unwinding operation is performed by exerting a traction on the clew 44 of the sail 7. A system of pulleys 36, 37, 42, 43, 46, 47 makes it possible, with the aid of the same sheet 16, to ensure both traction on the sail 7 and rotation of the tube 3.
