A method for packaging articles to be removed, in which the articles are progressively deposited into a packaging receptacle, all the articles contained in the said receptacle are compacted after each deposit until a given maximum compacting force is exerted and then the pressure on the said articles is taken off; and when the receptacle is full, the articles deposited are once again compacted until the said given maximum force is exerted, the articles are held compressed until the time of removal of the full receptacle after having taken the pressure off the articles filling it, and then a new packaging receptacle is put in place; and a machine which implements this method and which includes a ram 4, 5, 6 especially for this purpose. The invention is used especially for the packaging of hospital waste. <IMAGE>
