PURPOSE:To make a good-contrast display with a small leak of light by forming a light shield film of the metallic material of a gate electrode on a thin-film transistor (TR) side. CONSTITUTION:The light shield film 4B is formed of the same metallic material with a gate line 4A successively to the gate line. This light shield 4B is formed a little bit wider than a source line 7A in the direction of the source line and extends to right before an adjacent thin-film TR TFT. A picture element electrode 9 is therefore almost surrounded with the gate line 4A which performs light shielding operation and the light shield film 4B. This film 4B is formed by forming a pattern together with the line 4. The accuracy of mask matching is, for example, about 2mum and much smaller than the matching accuracy between the two substrates 1 and 2, so that the device is accurately formed.
