In measuring armature overtravel in electromechanical relays, the times T1, T2 of the closure of the moving and stationary contacts (24, 22), and of the armature hitting its stop, are determined and the interval (T2-T1) between these two events is measured to obtain an indication of the overtravel distance. As shown, a voltage Vo changes abruptly when the contacts (24, 22) close (T1), and the relay coil coil current Ic, as sensed at a resistor (36), exhibits an inflection (46) when the armature (14 Fig. 1 not shown) strikes a stop (34) at time T2. <IMAGE>
