An overvoltage protection device for cables has the form of a plug-in unit for a terminal block. The overvoltage protection device comprises a plastic main body from which metal contacts project on one side. The main body accommodates the other ends of the contacts on its other side, air gaps being formed between these ends for spark discharge of overcurrents or overvoltages in the cable. The contacts in this case comprise an earth rail, which is connected to earth via the terminal block, and contact plates which are connected to the respective cables via the terminal block.
