The device for measuring and machining workpieces for coordinate measuring instruments and machine tools comprises optical deflecting elements which are arranged on an X, Y, and Z carriage and which are assigned beam-position sensitive photoelectric receivers (detectors). By means of these deflecting elements, a Cartesian coordinate system which is independent of the coordinates which are formed by the guides of the carriages is constructed by optical pilot beams which are emitted by a laser. Control devices which are controlled by the signals of the receivers via a computer, for a base and intermediate base carrying the deflecting elements, make it possible to determine precisely the position, for example of a measurement head or a tool, in the work space of the machine in six degrees of freedom.
