A chain guard, in particular for bicycles and mopeds, contains a structural element, made of high-molecular polyethylene, resting in a floating manner on the chain and held resiliently in contact with the chain, which structural element reaches down at least on one side of the chain over parts of its side flank and at least in the support region, which is in contact with the chain, is composed of a material which has a low coefficient of friction with respect to the chain material. The structural element is designed corresponding to the chain profile as a guard part running in a V-shape or L-shape, with a circular-arc segment-like region matching the deflecting front-wheel sprocket or pinion and two essentially rectilinear legs connected thereto, and has a guide surface in each case directed inwardly, matched to the shape of the chain and its outer contour and resting at least in part on said chain, and at least one guard surface covering the chain laterally at one side.
