Iron alloys, for treating molten iron to produce ductile or compacted graphite cast irons, have the compsns. (by wt.): (i) 0.1-10.0% Si, 0.1-10.0% Ni, 0.5-4.0% Mg, opt. up to 2.0% rare earth element(s), balance Fe; (ii) 3.0-6.0% Si, up to 0.6% Ni, 0.9-2.0% Mg, balance Fe; and (iii) 0.1-10.0% Si, 0.5-4.0% Mg, 0.1-10.0% Ni, 0.1-2.0% Ce, 0.5-6.5% C, balance Fe. Alloys, for treating molten iron to produce ductile or compacted graphite cast irons, are produced forming a molten iron bath of compsn. (by wt.) 0.1-10.0% Si, 0.1-10.0% Ni, 0.5-4.0% Mg, opt. 0.1-2.0% rare earth element(s), balance Fe or (B) 3.0-6.0% Si, up to 0.6% Ni, 0.9-2.0% Mg, opt. up to 2.0% rare earth element(s), balance Fe, followed by maintaining bath (A) under superatmospheric pressure of inert gas while reaction takes place and rapidly solidfying the melt or maintaining bath (B) under 50-75 psig pressure of inert gas while reaction takes place and adjusting the proportions of the metals to produce the iron alloy with a density of 65.-7.5 g/cc.
