The application relates to a process for the preparation of malonaldehyde derivatives of the formula (I) <IMAGE> in which R<1> to R<3> denote alkyl having 1-6 carbon atoms and R<2> and/or R<3> also denote hydrogen, in which tetraalkoxypropanes of the formula (II) <IMAGE> in which R<1> to R<3> have the abovementioned meaning, are reacted in the presence of zeolites and/or phosphates and/or phosphoric acid on support material as catalysts.
