For simple assembly of an electric motor, a retaining tongue is integrally formed on the brush supporting plate, the latching tab of which retaining tongue engages in a depression in the brush in an assembly position and holds said brush at a distance from the commutator, so that the commutator can easily be fitted between the brushes. In order that the locking of the brushes is released in a simple manner during assembly and in order that the means for doing so can be constructed easily, the retaining tongue has a head piece which projects to a cut-out, which is open at the end, in the housing jacket.
