PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filing device, allowing registration to be simply carried out, without executing both search mode and addition mode, even when it is not clear whether a page is added or a new file is to be created. SOLUTION: When a user designates one of auxiliary information, such as index, document name and document number, search means, searches a magneto-optical disc drive 5 as to whether a document file having the designated auxiliary information is present. If it is not present, a document file selection means 52 executes preparation for creating the new document file in the magneto-optical disc drive 5; and when it is present, the document file selection means 52 displays a candidate document file on a candidate display screen.
