NEW MATERIAL:A carbostyril derivative expressed by formula I (YO<-> is protected hydroxyl group) or salt thereof. EXAMPLE:8-Benzyloxy-5-{ 1-hydroxy-2-[ N-[2-( p-methoxyphenyl )-1-methylethyl] amino]ethyl}carbostyril.hydrochloride. USE:Useful as a synthetic intermediate for a bronchodilator 8-hydroxy-5-(1- hydroxy-2-[N-(2-p-methoxyphenyl)-1-methyleth-yl)amino]ethyl]carbostyril having powerful adrenergic beta2 receptor stimulating action. PREPARATION:A carbostyril compound expressed by formula II is reacted with N-[2-(p-methoxyphenyl)-methylethyl]amino to give a compound expressed by formula III which is a reaction product. The resultant compound is then reduced to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
